The National Insurance Company has opened applications for 321 Administrative Officer posts, and the window is short: 8 to 28 October 2026. The pay is what makes this notification stand out. The basic starts at ₹82,485 per month, which is a scale most government exams for graduates do not reach at entry level. Roughly 200 of the posts are for generalists, which means any graduate can apply, while 121 are for specialists such as lawyers, chartered accountants, IT graduates and engineers. This guide covers the posts, eligibility, dates, exam pattern and the mistakes to avoid while applying.
Last updated: 9 October 2026. Facts below are compiled from published reports and may change, so confirm on nationalinsurance.nic.co.in before you act.

Generalist or specialist: choosing the right route
The first decision is which discipline to apply for, because you can select only one. Generalist posts (200) are open to graduates and postgraduates in any stream. The specialist posts are discipline-wise: Finance (CA and CMA) 20, Legal 20, Information Technology 11 including backlog, Automobile Engineers 20, Risk Engineers 28, Company Secretaries 2 and Agriculture 20. If you qualify for a specialist post, remember that the number of candidates for it is usually far smaller than for the generalist category, although the mains includes a professional knowledge paper.
A practical way to decide: if you are a law graduate or a chartered accountant, the specialist route gives you a narrower competition and a paper in a subject you already know. If you are a graduate without a professional degree, generalist is your only option, and it is also where most applicants will be.

Dates to remember
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Applications open | 8 October 2026 |
| Last date to apply | 28 October 2026 |
| Pre-exam training | November 2026 |
| Prelims | 17 November 2026 |
| Mains | 22 December 2026 |
The gap between the closing date and the prelims is just under three weeks, so do not wait for the last day to apply and then start preparing. Prepare as you apply.
Salary and what it means
The pay scale is ₹82,485 to ₹1,56,745 in stages, and the report suggests an in-hand salary of around ₹1,14,000 per month at a metro posting. The in-hand figure depends on the city, allowances and deductions, so treat it as an estimate. Compared with other graduate-level recruitments, this is a high entry pay, which explains why the application numbers for insurance officer posts are usually large.
Fee
₹1,000 for the unreserved category and ₹250 for SC, ST and persons with disabilities, paid online. The coverage does not mention a fee for other categories, so check the notice for yours.
The exam: what to prepare
| Stage | Marks | Time | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prelims | 100 | 60 min | English 30, Reasoning 35, Quant 35; 0.25 negative marking; each section has a 20-minute limit |
| Mains (Generalist) | 250 | 180 min | English, Reasoning, Quant, General Awareness and Computer Knowledge |
| Mains (Specialist) | 250 | 180 min | Five sections of 40 questions plus a 50-question professional paper |
| Descriptive English | 30 | 30 min | Essay, précis and comprehension, 10 marks each |
Because every prelims section has its own 20-minute limit, you cannot move time from a strong section to a weak one. That makes sectional practice more important than full mocks in the first weeks. Quant is 35 marks, and many candidates lose here by trying everything. Pick the topics you are fast in, such as simplification and number series, and leave the long data interpretation sets for the end.
A 19-day plan for the prelims
You have roughly three weeks between the closing date and the prelims. In the first week, take one sectional test every day and keep a log of wrong answers by topic. In the second, move to full prelims mocks with the 20-20-20 time split, and write one essay or précis every alternate day for the descriptive paper that will come later. In the last week, do short revision and two mocks, and stop learning new tricks two days before the exam.
Application mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the wrong discipline code. You can apply to only one, so read the code table slowly.
- Entering marks wrongly. The 60 percent condition is strictly checked at later stages.
- Uploading blurry or oversized scans. Follow the size limits in the notice.
- Paying the fee and not saving the receipt.

Is an insurance AO job right for you?
An Administrative Officer in a public sector general insurer works in underwriting, claims, accounts, legal or IT, depending on the branch and the discipline. The work is desk-based and process-heavy, and you will deal with policy documents, claim files and regulatory rules. Pay and perks are good, but the learning curve in the first year is steep, and the transfer policy is a fact of life in nationalised insurers. If you want a stable corporate-style government job and are comfortable with numbers and documentation, it is a strong option.
Common mistakes in insurance and bank exams
Candidates often prepare for the written test and forget that the descriptive English paper carries a separate qualifying standard. Thirty marks for essay, précis and comprehension is small, but weak writing can still hurt you at the final stage. Practise writing within the time limit, in clean handwriting or on the keyboard, whichever the exam demands. A second mistake is over-reliance on shortcuts for quant. The prelims has only 35 quant questions and each section has its own timer, so accuracy beats speed tricks.
How to track your application
After you submit, note your registration number and save the final PDF. When the prelims call letters are released, they are generally uploaded on the recruitment page of the company website, and an email or SMS is sent to the registered contact details. Keep your email inbox and spam folder in check around mid-November. If you spot a mistake in your form after submission, look for a correction window in the notification, because it may not exist.
