If you are preparing for railway exams, you already know how confusing the numbering can be: CEN 01/2026, CEN 02/2026, CEN 06/2026, CEN 07/2026. Each number is a separate recruitment with its own post, qualification, exam date and selection process. The result is that many candidates prepare for the wrong exam or miss a closing date. This page lines up the entire 2026-27 railway cycle by CEN number, as far as published calendars and notices go, and explains which recruitment suits which candidate. Dates marked tentative are taken from calendars and should be confirmed on the official site.
Last updated: 9 October 2026. Facts below are compiled from published reports and may change, so confirm on rrbapply.gov.in and your regional RRB website before you act.

How to read CEN numbers
CEN stands for Centralised Employment Notice. Each CEN covers one family of posts across all railway zones. The number before the slash is the serial order in the year, and the number after it is the year. So CEN 01/2026 is the first notice of 2026 (Assistant Loco Pilot), and CEN 07/2026 is the seventh (NTPC undergraduate). Once you know the CEN number of the exam you want, you can search for it on rrbapply.gov.in and your regional RRB website and ignore the noise.

| 02/2026 | Technician (about 6,557 posts) | Admit cards out; CBT 6 to 9 October 2026 |
| 03/2026 | Section Controller | Exam dates listed as 12 and 13 October 2026 |
| 04/2026 | Junior Engineer | Vacancy count unsettled (reports say 2,585 and 4,029) |

The Section Controller and Junior Engineer entries come from a calendar page, so treat them as indicative. If you plan to apply for either, go to the official board site for confirmation.
Which exam suits whom
Class 10 plus ITI: Assistant Loco Pilot and some technician posts, as reported, with trade-specific conditions. Class 12 pass: NTPC undergraduate clerk-level posts, subject to the eligibility in the full notice. Graduates: NTPC graduate posts. Engineering diploma or degree: Junior Engineer and some technician and ALP routes. Because these recruitments overlap, many candidates are eligible for more than one, and the real decision is which to prioritise.
How to prioritise when you qualify for several
List each exam with its exam date, its number of vacancies and its difficulty for you. Prioritise the exam that is nearest in time, since you cannot prepare for everything at once. If two exams share a large part of the syllabus (maths, reasoning and general awareness are common to NTPC, Group D and ALP stage 1), prepare those subjects once. Then add the extra subject for the nearest exam: technical subjects for technician, ALP and JE, or typing for clerk-cum-typist posts.
Admit cards, city slips and exam shifts
For each exam, the board releases an exam city intimation slip first and the admit card a few days before. The slip tells you the city and date, so that you can book travel. The admit card carries the full centre address, reporting time and gate closing time. Do not book a non-refundable ticket until you see the city slip. Our RRB Technician admit card guide shows what to check on an RRB admit card.
Fee, refunds and corrections
Application fees for RRB exams are generally refunded, minus bank charges, to candidates who appear in the first stage computer-based test. The NTPC graduate notice states this explicitly. Each notice also provides a correction window with a limited set of editable fields. Read the rules of the correction window before you submit, because you may not be able to change your name, date of birth or category later.
Where to verify dates
The only reliable places are rrbapply.gov.in, rrb.indianrailways.gov.in and the website of your own RRB zone. Aggregator calendars like this page are for planning only. Exam dates move, and so do application windows, especially when a corrigendum is issued.

A simple monthly routine for railway aspirants
Once a week, check the three official websites for new notices. Once a month, update your document folder: scan new certificates, renew your photograph if needed and check that your email and mobile number work. Before every big exam, run a full mock test on a computer. This routine takes about an hour a week and prevents most of the avoidable mistakes candidates make in railway recruitments.

What the calendar cannot tell you
A calendar gives you months and dates. It does not tell you the eligibility details, the number of vacancies by zone, the exam pattern or the medical standards. Those live in each CEN notification. A good habit is to download the notification PDF for every exam you plan to attempt and keep it in a single folder named after the CEN. Highlight the age cut-off date, the qualification clause and the fee dates. That one folder will save you from the last-minute search for details that every aspirant faces.
Why dates slip
Exams get rescheduled for reasons that candidates cannot predict: festivals, elections, technical issues with the exam vendor or an overlap with another large exam. Do not plan non-refundable travel or leave based on a calendar date. Wait for the city intimation slip, which is the first reliable confirmation. If a date changes, the board publishes a notice on its website, and that notice, not a social media post, is what you can trust.
How to avoid burnout in a long cycle
Railway recruitment cycles run for months, and the temptation is to study without break. Plan one rest day each week, keep a fixed sleep schedule and use short phases of intense preparation before each exam. Many successful candidates treat their preparation like a job with fixed hours rather than an endless race, and they find that it improves both retention and mood.
