What the short notice tells us

The short notice dated 21 September 2026 gives the skeleton: four posts, a tentative total of 1,688 vacancies, pay levels 2 and 3 under the 7th Pay Commission, a window from 15 October to 13 November, and a computer-based test expected in January 2027. It does not give fee, age limit or education rules. We are deliberately not guessing those, because candidates have lost money by trusting aggregator tables that copied last year’s numbers.

Post-wise vacancies

Post Department Vacancies
Trains Clerk Traffic (Operating) 188
Commercial cum Ticket Clerk Traffic (Commercial) 700
Accounts Clerk cum Typist Accounts 200
Junior Clerk cum Typist General 600

The numbers are tentative and the notice says a zone-wise table is attached, so your own RRB region may have a very different count from the national total. When the full notification is out, look at the annexure for your zone first.

What the jobs are like

A Commercial cum Ticket Clerk works at booking offices and parcel counters and deals with the public all day. A Trains Clerk sits in the operating department and handles train movement records. Accounts Clerk cum Typist and Junior Clerk cum Typist are office posts where typing speed in English or Hindi is part of the job. If you dislike public-facing work, you will want to think about the order in which you list your preferences.

Eligibility: what to expect, and what to verify

In earlier undergraduate-level cycles the basic requirement was Class 12 pass, with a typing test for the clerk-cum-typist posts. That is a pattern, not a promise. The 14 October notification is the only source that counts. When it appears, check four things in this order: the minimum qualification, the age limit and its cut-off date, whether a typing skill test is required, and the category-wise relaxation.

Salary level

Pay Level 2 and Level 3 are the entry levels for clerical posts in the railways. The exact basic pay for each level is in the notice. As with every central government job, dearness allowance and other allowances are added on top.

How to prepare in the meantime

The January 2027 test date gives you roughly three months. Split that time into three blocks. In the first block, rebuild your base: arithmetic up to Class 10, simple reasoning (series, analogies, coding-decoding) and the basics of English. In the second, practise sectional tests with a timer. In the third, give full mock tests and analyse the mistakes. Keep a notebook for wrong answers. Reviewing your own errors beats reading one more book.

If your target includes the typing posts, start typing practice today. Speed can be built, but it takes weeks. Pick English or Hindi based on what the notification asks and practise on a computer keyboard, not a phone.

Things to do before 15 October

  • Complete your One Time Registration details if the portal asks for them, and keep your email and mobile number active.
  • Scan your Class 10 certificate, Class 12 marksheet, ID, category certificate and signature in the sizes mentioned in the notice.
  • Open your bank or UPI app and confirm that online payment works.
  • Keep a recent photograph with a plain background ready.

How to apply when the window opens

  1. Read the full notification on rrb.indianrailways.gov.in on or after 14 October 2026.
  2. Register on rrbapply.gov.in when the link for CEN 07/2026 goes live on 15 October.
  3. Fill your details exactly as they appear on your Class 10 certificate.
  4. Upload documents, pay the fee if applicable and submit before 13 November 2026.
Step by step guide: RRB NTPC Undergraduate Recruitment 2026
How to apply

Graduate or undergraduate: which one should you pick?

If you are a graduate, you can apply to the graduate posts, and in many cycles graduates may also be eligible for undergraduate-level posts, though the pay level is lower. Read the eligibility clause. Our guide to RRB NTPC Graduate 2026 explains the higher-level posts, and the railway exam calendar shows how the whole RRB cycle fits together.

How to read a railway notification without getting lost

Railway notifications are long, and the first-time reader tends to skim the table and miss the paragraph that decides eligibility. A reliable way to read one: start with the CEN number and the list of posts, then go straight to the eligibility section and read the age cut-off date, then the annexures. Annexures usually hold the zone-wise vacancies, the category-wise split and the list of permitted qualifications. Only after that should you read the exam scheme and the fee.

Keep one rule in mind while doing so: if a note on a job portal contradicts the board notice, the board notice wins every time, even if the portal looks more detailed.

Picking your RRB zone sensibly

Undergraduate-level railway posts are filled zone by zone, so your choice of RRB matters. Vacancy counts differ widely between regions, and so does the number of candidates who apply. A zone with fewer vacancies is not always harder if fewer people apply to it, but you will not know that in advance. A sensible way to decide is to look at the vacancy table of the zones nearest to your home, then consider whether you would actually be willing to be posted in that region. Railway postings follow the zone, and the post you get is usually in or around it.

Mistakes seen in earlier railway forms

  • Choosing a zone in a hurry and then wanting to change it. The correction window is limited, and not every field can be edited in it.
  • Uploading a photograph that does not meet the size or background requirement.
  • Applying with an email or mobile number that is shared with a relative and then missing the SMS about the exam city.
  • Ignoring the last-day rush. Servers slow down in the final 48 hours of almost every central recruitment.

What a clerk job looks like after joining

Clerical posts in the railways are the entry point of a long career ladder. Promotions and departmental exams follow railway rules, and some candidates go on to higher posts through internal selection. We are not giving timelines for promotion because they depend on vacancies and rules that change, but if you want a stable government job with set working hours, it is a good starting point. Keep in mind that the work is public-facing or paper-heavy, and you will deal with queues, records and deadlines.
